Progressive work
My group and I are doing about this organisation call the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS). SOS is a organisation which is non-profit and non-religious. The aim of SOS is to prevent suicide by providing emotional support and befriending to those who are despairing, discourage or distressed. They have professionals and members of the public on detecting the warning signs of suicide. This is done through talks and workshops and through our annual Suicide Awareness Week. They have 24hr hotline, face-to-face counseling sessions. They also provide myths and facts.
What do they do?
They help suicide – prone victims to prevent them from suicide by providing emotional support and befriending to those who are despairing, discouraged or distressed. They help people who feel like suicide to change their mind set.
What do they provide?
They provide emotional support and by befriending the victims, who are despairing, discouraged or distressed. They also provide myths and facts about suicide. Also they provide some information on what to do if theirs is someone beside u have the mind of going to suicide.
What do they need?
They need more volunteers as they receive an average of more than 100 calls a day. There are probably many more callers therefore the number of calls they have is limited by the number of volunteers available to answer those calls.
Who are their clients?
Their clients are the people who are despairing, discouraged or distressed as they are a help line who helps the people from thinking about suicide. Or people whose friend got the sign of suicide can call and ask for help.
The organisation we compare with is The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
They follow five core strategies:
- Funds scientific research
- Offers educational programs for professionals
- Educates the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention
- Promotes policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
- Provides programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk, and involves them in the work of the Foundation.
Comparing this 2 website SOS and AFSP, SOS have a more interactive and not so boring web page while AFSP have a basic webpage but SOS make their web interactive until a point that is it hard to navigate and making people confuse. SOS does provide information but the information they provide is not as much as AFSP. AFSP provides a lot of information in their webpage and is easy to navigate. Also SOS does not use a social network media like AFSP. Using a social networking media can make them more well known and people can find them more easily. For example Facebook is a good social networking which connects people together now. People can invite their friends and the cycle will continue and thus more and more people will know about their SOS.
Week 11. Lecture – New Media Landscape
Lionel Chin from Ripplewerkz come to give us a talk today. It is his first time talking to so many people.But he did put in his effort as he wrote down in his notebook on what he must talk to us about.I think he did a very good job in talking to us and tried his very best in answering all the question we asked him.
5 key points the Speaker had mentioned during his presentation.
1)the past website and the new website
2)blog can help to advertise and match making and lots of things
3)reality of the working world is not as easy as we think,even if the ideas we come out have been rejected we need to work on other ideas for the boss or client
4)being a freelancer is not that easy as freelancer sometimes may need to work with other freelancer which sometimes may have problem
5)portfolio is very important.keeping all the work u have done and showing it to your employer will have a higher chances of getting the work
Things he inspired me was that when he is around our age,he already become a freelancer to help people build website furthermore by seeing the website he created really impress me.He was a student like us too and he can make a good website like that which have a lot of viewers each and everday.He is also the co-founder of Ripplewerkz which means he is one of the boss.Being at his age and able to start-up a business is very capable.
I think its useful to have a guest speaker to share their expertise, experience and “Tips & Tricks” of the trade.I have learn quite a lot this lecture.The things he shared with us is his own experiences of what he have been through to he is now.
National Archives of Singapore (NAS)
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation’s record keeper.The documents and materials created in the course of business.They reserve document that are important for legal or historical reasons.
NARA does not lend original documents for research use.
2) Do they use any Social Media & Web 2.0 technologies for public communication & education?
yes, they allow students to go there and use their computer to search for information but they are not allow to borrow their book home. They can only use it there.
What i have learn in lesson.
I learn about types of communication and distractions.
There are intrapersonal communication,interpersonal communication,group communication and mass communication.
When we are communicating,there are 2 types of distractions one is external and another one is internal.
External distractions can course by glare(light),noise(like from construction site),body language,weather and reception.
Internal distractions will be things like mood,illness(loss of voice),language skills,different cultural and mannerism and upbringing.
Literature Review

This article is about tablet devices that have not officially exist.It is about the notebook which is totally interactive.There will be no keyboard or mouse.A pen will be doing all the job to control to deleted to everything and can use finger to interact as well .The notebook have favorites where you can just clip content from the web to the page.It will be easier to access to all the thing you needed as it is interactive.Photo can be taken and can change the size and position of the photo.
Though this devices is still not officially release or exist,i think this will be a very powerful media.As we are living in the world of technologies,this interactive media will gain our interest.People will want to try out this kind of interactive media,maybe the world will have interactive media all around.Coming out with this devices improve our technology but more money will be needed to purchase or build.We are still not sure about if this kind of devices is really going to help us or harm us.For now,it is just something new that everyone want to try out.But I believe that in the future the new media can be access by our finger tip.
Another one is Userplane Offers Exportable,Interactive Chat
MiniChat is a mini embeddable chat tool that displays a preview of live chat that’s taking place within Userplane’s Webchat 2.It allow users to communicate and join directly from the previous window if they’d like, without having to launch a separate chat application in a new window.
The advantage of this programme make it more convinent for the user itself and the viewers to open a different chat in a new window.Though this site they can also earn money from the ad’s the put in the web.

Second day of school
Today there’s no cmaths2 tut so class start at 11am today.But i went school at 10am as i woke up early today.Lesson was ok,but the 3hours break was way too long for now.I guess the 3hours of break will be studying time or doing project time.If that’s the case i think the break help us but for now it does not help.Went to get sketch book for mmp1 lesson.Oh ya,NMT today we learn about the evolution of media.For cmaths2 we learn about functions.I still don’t get what funtions is and i haven buy the cmaths2 book must buy tmr.goodnight and have a sweet dreams
